Following the Bill Nye-Ken Ham debate, the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary president Albert Mohler wrote a piece condemning “autonomous human reason,” saying it is the cause of the contention between science and religion.

The problem with human reason is that it, along with every other aspect of our humanity, was corrupted by the fall. This is what theologians refer to as the “noetic effects of the fall.” We have not lost the ability to know all things, but we have lost the ability to know them on our own authority and power. We are completely dependent upon divine revelation for the answers to the most important questions of life. Our sin keeps us from seeing what is right before our eyes in nature. We are dependent upon the God who loves us enough to reveal himself to us—and to give us his Word.

As it turns out, the reality and authority of divine revelation, more than any other issue, was what the debate last night was all about. As the closing statements made very clear, Ken Ham understood that fact, but Bill Nye did not.

In other words, like this sign here says, religion is not to blame for anything. It’s the stubborn reliance on human reason mucking things up. Mohler wants us to give up all this logic and science shit, and just trust the Bible (and Mohler, too, I presume). Life would be sooo much easier.

Let’s set the clock back to the Middle Ages, before troublemakers like Bacon and Galileo were around. Mohler would probably have trouble with Aquinas, too.

So who are these people, uncorrupted by the fall, who are able to tell us which parts of the bible are significant, and which parts to ignore?

Methinks I see a little bitty problem with that.

But who would be the “Official Translator of Gods Will and Word.”? I think I don’t want to know.

I knew a poster on a far-right religious board I frequent who use to claim that since he had the Holy Spirit, his interpretation of the Bible was infallible. Kid you not, he was basically claiming the same authority as the Pope. He was, of course, a young earth creationist.

Organized Religion and its (1980s on) major entry into the political theater in this country has done more damage to the church than anything else. They point to their own shrinking numbers and blame Satan, demons, gay marriage, abortion and the general “lack of morals and civility” in this country.

They are too blind to see that it is their own actions that are causing their decline. If a group continuously represents themselves as hateful, bigoted, miserly, and spiteful authoritarians who demand that everyone else be made to follow their group doctrine then there should be no mystery that they find it harder to gain new recruits.

Jesus advocated a life based on love, on human harmony, on giving and helping. He said that the best way to spread his word was to live life according to these doctrines and allow the “unsaved” to come to you asking about the secret to your happiness and serenity.

Look around at most of the “church” in this country and then ask yourself, “Does this bear any real resemblance at all to the doctrine and teachings of Christ?” Unfortunately for me and I suspect for many millions of others the answer is a resounding “NO!”

I’ve known my share of “Holier than thou” hypocrites and it’s the main reason I do not belong to any organized church. My mother was raised Catholic and had nothing good to say about her experience and thankfully never demanded I go to service. We would joke about the people who would be absolved of their sins on Sunday and then spend the next six days pissing all over everybody else until next Sunday where they would then be cleansed via magic words and a hearty donation. It seems that some peoples search for knowledge takes them no further than looking for reinforcement of their present beliefs. A world of books and knowledge and an inability to comprehend them is how I view it, Anything but “Christian” is how I view far too many “churches” these days. They need to tend thy own garden, as I’ve read somewhere a long time ago.

I walked away from organized Religion years ago. My walk away started after I watched a few of those TV preachers that wanted money more then they wanted to teach the true teachings of Jesus.

The problem with organized religion is the problem with all other philosophical constructs. It soon gives power to people and then it becomes an ideology.

Ideologies are not concerned with being good but with being right.

I tend to doubt the sincerity of any person claiming to know the word of God, yet takes tax-free donations via Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PaPal and cash.
